On March 29 in Novokuznetsk SGS hosted the grand opening of their largest coal testing facility in Russia. The new laboratory has increased the capacity of the former SGS coal lab servicing Urals and Siberia, and has expanded significantly its service offering. Investment to this project totalled 2 million CHF.

“SGS operates 66 coal labs all over the world”, said the SGS Energy Minerals Vice-President Michael Evans during the opening ceremony, “only 16 of them have the float/sink capability needed for core analysis and plant testing work. The Novokuznetsk facility is now one of those”.

Teymur Abasov, COO of the SGS Group for Eastern Europe and Middle East, noted that SGS top-management anticipates substantial economic growth in Russia and intends to keep investing in development of SGS capabilities in the Russian market. “As a world leader in inspection, verification, testing and certification we strive for being in the avant-garde and replicate in Russia the innovations available in our network”.

Oleg Ozerov, Executive Director of SGS Vostok Limited, the Russian subsidiary of SGS, emphasized the fact that SGS services in all sectors let it be agriculture, consumer goods, oil or industrial manufacturing, are focused on providing clients with a competitive edge through enhancing quality, reducing risk, improving productivity and ensuring compliance. The Novokuznetsk lab’s target is to help coal companies to increase their profitability thanks to the wide range of services: from coal quality inspection to coal preparation plant design consulting”.

Established in Russia since 1981, SGS opened the branch in Kuzbass region in 1995, and in 1998 the SGS Novokuznetsk coal laboratory started operations. By 2010, the lab processed about 7000 samples monthly. “However the old lab’s capacity could not satisfy the ever increasing needs of our clients”, noted Egidijus Jokubauskas, SGS Minerals Services Business Manager in Russia. The lab upgrade and expansion project included extension of sample preparation capacity, installation of nine new mobile modules for sample preparation on distant sites and purchase of state-of-the-art equipment, including the equipment for float/sink washability analysis.
