Surveillance Services Helped Speed Up Handling of Vessels for Severstal-Vtorchermet by SGS
As a result of the 2011 navigation season, Severstal-Vtorchermet, the scrap-making enterprise within the Severstal Russian Steel division, supplied about 460 thousand tons of ferrous metals scrap to Cherepovetsk Metal Works, also member of the Severstal Russian Steel division, by water transport. This volume exceeded the one supplied in the corresponding period of 2010 by 49%.
In 2011, for the first time Severstal-Vtorchermet introduced new methods of handling scrap shipped by water transport. Starting from May 2011, SGS, the old partner of Cherepovetsk Metal Works in the field of verification services, took part in the acceptance of vessels. Besides, the process of vessels’ cleanup after unloading took place outside the unloading area.
All this boosted significantly the speed of vessels’ handling, resulting in additional benefits for the company which had already benefited from supplying scrap by water transport in comparison with railway transport.
In the framework of the Severstal-Vtorchermet project SGS carries out draft-survey services. During the past season, 336 vessels have been inspected.
