We are pleased to announce that the SGS branch in St. Petersburg has been accredited to certification of forest management in the framework of the Russian national forest certification PEFC-FCR. In December 2012, the company released the first certificate of conformity within this certification system.

The first organization whose forest management system has been certified by SGS within PEFC-FCR against FCR-ST-01-2006 has been Business-Marketing, which are active in the field of logging and woodworking in Khabarovsk and exercising exports to Europe, Japan, Korea and China. Currently, the total annual wood-cutting area of Business Marketing Group is more than 1.6 million m3, the total number of employees is more than 1 000 people. Average annual volume of shipments of the group are more than 300 thousand m3 of round wood, more than 130 thousand m3 of lumber and more than 90 thousand m3 of wood chips.

The FCR-ST-01-2006 forest management and forestry standard approved in 2009 by PEFC (The Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification-Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification) is based on the following principles:

  • Compliance with the law and international obligations of the Russian Federation
  • Biodiversity conservation, sustainability of forest ecosystems and forest functions
  • Identification, preservation and maintenance of high conservation value (HCV)
  • Respect for the workers’ rights, local communities and indigenous peoples
  • Planning and monitoring of forestry and forest management.

PEFC as an umbrella organization provides for the mutual recognition of national forest certification schemes, adapted to the specificities of the country. Each national system of certification undergoes a rigorous assessment against the PEFC criteria, which ensures compliance with the international requirements for sustainable forest management in each country. To date, over 30 PEFC endorsed national systems and more than 240 million hectares have been certified under the PEFC, which makes the PEFC forest certification system most prevalent in the world.

“For many years, SGS has been accredited within PEFC to certify sustainable forest management and chain of custody management in various countries in Europe, Africa and America”, - says Maxim Markov, Head of Forestry Certification in SGS Vostok Limited, the Russian subsidiary of SGS. – “Accreditation within the Russian national PEFC-FCR system allows us to expand the range of services to Russian timber market players”
